A renovation project for a classic sushi restaurant in Kinosaki-onsen, Hyogo Pref. Located in the heart of an onsen area, this restaurant was a place accessible to everyone not only to the tourists but also to the locals and regulars. Though the entire atmosphere was renewed, we aimed to keep the trace of the long beloved heritage of the place. Japanese cypress, cedar and granite was used as the main material, along with an approach finished by a plasterer in red iron oxide, giving a new image to the sushi restaurant. In contrast, other than the private rooms which were relocated for a clearer traffic line, both 1st and 2nd floors were kept the same as the original. Familiar aspects from the original interior, such as the large plate which was displayed and the menu boards were re-used in the new space. For the facade, the original lattice was combined with white stucco to fit the environment of the neighborhood.
